Grumpy’s Guide to Facebook for the 50+ Crowd
(Because yelling at the screen doesn’t make the post disappear)
Alright folks, you signed up for Facebook to see pictures of your grandkids and somehow ended up in an argument about gluten-free dog food with a woman named Cheryl from Augusta. Welcome to the internet.
Lucky for you, ol' Grumpy's here to help you navigate Zuckerberg's social maze without accidentally liking your ex's vacation pics from 2014.
Step 1: Set Up Your Profile (Without Oversharing)
Upload a profile picture. Preferably one where you’re not scowling or holding a fish.
Cover Photo: That’s the big one behind your head. Put a picture of your dog, your garden, or a blurry sunset you took with your flip phone.
About Section: Keep it simple. Don’t list every job you’ve ever had unless you want targeted ads for hemorrhoid cream.
Grumpy Tip: No one needs to know your blood type or your maiden name. That’s bait for hackers, not conversation starters.
Step 2: Friend Requests - Choose Wisely
Just because you went to high school with someone 40 years ago doesn’t mean you need to see their political rants now.
Only accept people you actually know or want to know.
Declining a request is not a crime. It’s self-care.
If someone looks suspicious or their profile pic is a hot young woman holding a puppy, it’s probably a scam. Sorry, Carl.
Grumpy Tip: Don’t friend your kids' friends unless you want them to stop posting entirely. Nothing dries up a timeline like Mom liking every post with "So proud of you!! <3"
Step 3: Posting Without Causing a Riot
Think before you post. Ask yourself:
Is it true?
Is it kind?
Is it gonna make your cousin Gary comment in all caps?
Grumpy's Golden Rule: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably came from someone with a flag and an eagle in their profile picture.
Grumpy Tip: Typing in all caps doesn’t make it more important. It just makes people think you’re yelling about your bunions again.
Step 4: Comments, Likes, and Shares (aka the Holy Trinity)
Like = Nice job, I see you.
Comment = You got something to say.
Share = You want everyone to see it. Make sure you actually read it first, Einstein.
Grumpy Tip: You don't need to comment "Amen" to stop bad luck. God's not on Facebook, and if He is, He ain't checking the chain letters.
Step 5: Messenger Isn’t the Emergency Hotline
Messenger is like texting but sneakier.
Don’t write a novel.
Don’t send 12 messages in a row if someone hasn’t replied.
And for the love of all things decent, don’t hit video call unless you’ve done your hair.
Grumpy Tip: You can ignore messages. You won’t get arrested. It’s not jury duty.
Step 6: Groups, Memes & Marketplace Madness
Groups are good for hobbies and neighborhood gossip.
Memes are those funny pictures with words. Laugh, react, move on.
Marketplace is like a yard sale but with more porch pickups and flaky people.
Grumpy Tip: Don’t buy a used mattress from a stranger on the internet. That’s how horror movies start.
Final Thoughts from Grumpy
Facebook can be fun if you don’t let it turn you into a tinfoil-hat-wearin’ conspiracy sharer with a cat filter stuck on your face.
Use it to connect, laugh, and stay in touch. And if it ever gets too annoying... just log off and go outside. The real world still exists.
And remember:
Don’t poke people. That feature’s been dead since 2012. Let it rest.
