(Because apparently English wasn't confusing enough already)
Alright, gather 'round, whippersnappers and word butchers. Back in my day, we said what we meant, and we meant what we said. Now everything sounds like a code word in a secret TikTok cult.
So, before you go calling someone "mid" or asking what the "vibe" is, let ol' Grumpy break it down so you don’t embarrass yourself (or worse, try to use these in public).
1. Suss
Short for "suspicious" or "suspect."
"That guy wearing a trench coat at the beach is lookin' kinda suss."
Grumpy Translation: I don’t trust that fella and neither should you.
2. Rizz
Short for "charisma." Used when someone’s got charm or game with the opposite sex.
"Gramps had mad rizz back in the sock hop days."
Grumpy Translation: He could sweet-talk the chrome off a bumper.
3. No Cap
Means "no lie." It’s the opposite of exaggerating.
"That pie was the best thing I’ve ever eaten, no cap."
Grumpy Translation: I’m not fibbin’. It was damn good.
4. Bet
Used to say "okay," "deal," or "you got it."
"You bringing the beans to the cookout?" "Bet."
Grumpy Translation: Sure thing, champ.
5. Mid
Means average, boring, or not that great.
"That movie was mid."
Grumpy Translation: Not worth the popcorn.
6. Slay
To do something really well or look amazing doing it.
"You slayed that dance routine."
Grumpy Translation: You done good, kid. Real good.
7. Touch Grass
A way of telling someone to go outside and get a grip on reality.
"You’ve been arguing online for six hours, go touch grass."
Grumpy Translation: Shut off the dang computer and go breathe some air.
8. Ratio
If a reply to a post gets more likes than the original, it’s "ratioed."
"Dude got ratioed for that pineapple pizza take."
Grumpy Translation: You said something dumb, and the internet roasted you.
9. Yeet
To throw something with force or enthusiasm.
"She yeeted her phone across the room."
Grumpy Translation: She chucked it like a hot potato.
10. Ick
A sudden turn-off or something that gives you the creeps.
"He clapped when the plane landed. Instant ick."
Grumpy Translation: That gave me the willies. No thank you.
Final Thoughts from Grumpy
Modern slang moves faster than a caffeinated squirrel. Don’t try to keep up. Just know enough to survive a conversation with your grandkids without thinking they joined a cult.
And remember:
If you ever hear someone say you "ate," that means you did great. Unless it’s at Thanksgiving, then it just means you cleared your plate.
